Few entrances in the Capitol carry as much ornament as these bronze doors, which illustrate scenes from the life of Christopher Columbus. Sculptor Randolph Rogers, who worked in Rome, designed the panels, and the doors were installed at the Capitol around 1863, about the time this print was made. The photograph comes from an album kept by Benjamin Brown French, who oversaw public buildings in Washington, and it documents the building during the Civil War, when the Capitol was still unfinished. The salted paper process, an early photographic method, gives the image its soft, warm tones.
