Few traces remain of Fort Santo Tomas, which Columbus built at Concepción de la Vega, an inland settlement in Hispaniola's Cibao valley and one of the earliest European outposts away from the coast. The record describes the fort as ruins, and the catalog also tags churches in the same town, suggesting the photographer was interested in the colonial remains as a group. The print dates to about 1893 and was copyrighted by F.L. Vasquez, placing it among the late nineteenth-century photographic views of Caribbean sites. It shows how little of the 1490s settlement had survived some four centuries later.
