Soldiers of a cavalry troop are shown drilling at Fort Yellowstone, the Army post at Mammoth Hot Springs, in this view. From 1886 until 1918, Army troops administered the park, guarding its geysers and wildlife against poachers and vandals, and the fort served as their headquarters. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single three-dimensional scene. The record credits B.L. Singley with the copyright, though its caption details are unverified.
