Set on a bench above the Mammoth Hot Springs terraces, Fort Yellowstone served as the headquarters for the Army's management of the park, which lasted from 1886 until the National Park Service was created in 1916. Its stone and frame buildings, arranged around a parade ground, gave the park a lasting military presence and housed the troops who patrolled its roads and guarded against poaching and vandalism. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold scenic and town views to travelers in the early twentieth century.
