Soldiers of the U.S. Army cavalry were stationed at Fort Yellowstone, the post at Mammoth Hot Springs, when this stereograph was made around 1903. From 1886 until the National Park Service was created in 1916, Army troops administered Yellowstone, patrolling its roads and backcountry against poachers, vandals and careless campers. Underwood & Underwood, the stereo publisher, sold cards like this one to a public eager to see the park's geysers and wildlife. The card reminds viewers that the nation's first national park was protected by the military long before civilian rangers took over.
