Inside Old Faithful Inn, the lobby rises several stories to a log-and-timber ceiling, and this view centers on the great stone fireplace that anchors the room. The inn opened in 1904 near the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone, and its rustic design, built from local lodgepole pine and rough-hewn logs, was meant to make visitors feel they were in the wilderness while still enjoying comfortable lodging. This photograph was taken by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose color and black-and-white views of American landmarks circulated widely as travel souvenirs in the early twentieth century. Its caption card lists fireplaces and inns among its subjects, a reminder of how central that hearth was to the building's character.
