A color collotype made around 1910 by the Albertype Company, this print depicts a crowded New York waterfront that its record places in the early 1800s. In that period the city's piers and wharves were the center of its commerce, where sailing ships unloaded cargo and goods moved between vessels, warehouses, and carts. The title was supplied by Library of Congress staff, so it describes the subject rather than quoting an original caption. Collotype reproduction produced soft tonal gradations that made older scenes like this one appealing to viewers looking back at the port's earlier days.
