Lit after dark, this watercolor and gouache study pairs the New York harbor with the glow of the skyline, a nighttime view that sets it apart from the daylight scenes around it. Joseph Pennell, the Philadelphia-born illustrator best known for drawing the city's bridges, towers and waterfront, made the drawing on cream paper sometime between about 1921 and 1926. Like the other works in its group, it is catalogued as an unfinished study rather than a completed composition. It entered the Library of Congress through the bequest of Pennell's estate, which was settled after his death in 1926.
