The setting is the Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's plantation home outside Nashville, where this print shows Theodore Roosevelt posed with companions in the dining room. The photograph is dated around 1907, but that date comes from an unverified caption card and should be read as approximate. The Ladies' Hermitage Association had been preserving Jackson's house since 1889, and by the early twentieth century it drew visitors eager to see the rooms of the seventh president. A sitting president photographed there links Roosevelt's time in office to the older tradition of honoring Jackson's legacy.
