Standing among a group of officials, President Theodore Roosevelt appears beside Manuel Amador, the first president of the Republic of Panama, though the identification comes from a caption card and remains unverified. Amador led Panama after it separated from Colombia in 1903, a break that opened the way for the United States to build the Panama Canal. Roosevelt's 1906 visit to the Canal Zone, the first by a sitting American president to travel outside the country, tied the two men closely to that project. The print was issued by H.C. White Co., a firm that made photoprints of public figures and events.
