A rare pairing of two celebrities, this 1914 photograph places escape artist Harry Houdini beside former President Theodore Roosevelt aboard the H.A.L. Imperator, the large Hamburg America Line ocean liner that had entered service only a year or so earlier. By 1914 Roosevelt had left the presidency and was a prominent public figure, while Houdini was at the height of his fame for stage escapes and his campaigns against spiritualist fraud. The picture captures two men who were both masters of publicity, posed on one of the most famous passenger ships of the period.
