Few visitors to Million Dollar Pier expected to find a private home at the end of its boardwalk, but this view shows a residence with a garden and sculpture set among the pier's buildings. The pier was built by John L. Young and opened in 1906 as a showpiece of amusements and promenading in Atlantic City. Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, produced views of resorts and towns across the country, so the picture shows how the seaside resort presented itself to visitors during the early years of its boom.
