Steeplechase Pier, one of the amusement piers jutting into the Atlantic at Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the subject here, shown alongside the boardwalk that ran along the beach. Atlantic City had built the first boardwalk in the country in 1870, and by the 1910s its piers drew day-trippers and vacationers arriving by rail from Philadelphia and New York. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns and resorts for travel promotion in this period, made this glass negative between about 1910 and 1920. It offers a record of how the resort's seaside entertainment looked just before the boom years that followed.
