Steeplechase Pier ran out over the Atlantic from Atlantic City's boardwalk, and it took its name from a mechanical horse-race ride that drew riders and spectators alike. Like other piers of its day, it offered rides, music, and sea air to vacationers who arrived by rail from Philadelphia and New York. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country around the turn of the twentieth century recording resorts and scenery. The date of about 1905 is a estimate, so the view most likely reflects the boardwalk crowds of the early 1900s.
