A sailboat named Albion, seen beside the pier at the inlet, sets this view apart from other Atlantic City scenes, with the open water of the bay behind it. Around 1905 the resort was a booming seaside destination, and its inlet waterfront was where working boats, pleasure sailing, and visitors arriving by rail all met. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, rail lines, and resorts and sold the views as prints and postcards. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
