Young's Million Dollar Pier, built over the water off the Atlantic City boardwalk, is preserved here as a pair of 8 by 10 inch glass negatives meant to be read side by side as one panorama. The pier opened in 1906 as a sprawling entertainment complex of rides, theaters, and restaurants, and it became one of the most talked-about attractions on the Jersey Shore. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document resorts and cities across the country around 1900 to 1910, made views like this one for sale to a national market. Worth noticing is how the pier's long frontage stretches out over the ocean, showing how much of the resort's appeal depended on the boardwalk and the sea.
