Young's Pier, one of the amusement piers jutting into the Atlantic from Atlantic City's boardwalk, is the subject of this glass-plate negative made between 1895 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which commissioned thousands of views of American resorts, rail lines and cities in that era, often used large-format plates like this 8 x 10 inch negative to capture crowds and architecture in sharp detail. Atlantic City was then at the height of its reputation as a seaside resort, reached by rail from Philadelphia and New York, and its piers offered promenades, music, and entertainment that drew visitors by the thousands each season.
