The boardwalk at Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which dates from between 1895 and 1910. The resort's wooden walk was first laid in 1870 to keep sand from being tracked into the beachfront hotels, and it soon became a place to see and be seen. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture. The firm photographed towns, rail routes and resorts across the country and sold the views to the public, and its negatives later entered the Library of Congress collection. This one reached the library as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
