Crowds packed the Atlantic City boardwalk on this c1910 photograph, which the Library of Congress holds as a single print registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. The boardwalk, laid along the Atlantic shore in 1870 as a way to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, had by the 1900s become one of the country's great seaside promenades, lined with hotels, shops and amusement piers. Images like this one capture the leisure culture of the era, when tens of thousands of visitors arrived by rail each summer to stroll, rest in rolling chairs and watch the ocean.
