Few resort scenes of the 1910s captured the seaside crowds of Atlantic City as directly as this view of the boardwalk and bathers. The Atlantic City boardwalk had been in place since 1870, and by the 1910s it was the center of a resort that drew large numbers of visitors from Philadelphia and New York. The print was registered for copyright under the name of Irving Underhill, a New York photographer whose views were sold as commercial photoprints. Its caption card is unverified, so its exact date and location should be read as approximate.
