A young woman striking a playful, confident pose stands out among the bathers wading in the surf at Atlantic City, New Jersey, in this print from about 1897. The record credits the picture to B.W. Kilburn, the Littleton, New Hampshire, maker known for stereoviews and scenic cards sold to tourists. By then Atlantic City was a major seaside resort, reached by rail from Philadelphia and New York, and beach scenes like this one show how visitors used the ocean for leisure. Bathing costumes of the period were made of heavy wool and covered most of the body, so the wading figures look far more modestly dressed than beachgoers of later decades.
