Few resort scenes from the early 1900s show beach dress as plainly as this view of bathers at Atlantic City, around 1908. Bathing costumes of the period were heavy wool garments with skirts and stockings, far from modern swimwear, and the picture shows how seriously visitors took their seaside outings. The image survives as a large glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its many views of American towns, resorts and scenery. Atlantic City, on the New Jersey coast, had by then become one of the country's most popular seaside destinations.
