Made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, this beach view is catalogued as Detroit Publishing Company number 033459. The Detroit firm sold photographs of American cities, rail lines and resorts in the years around 1900, and Atlantic City was one of the places it recorded. By the 1890s the New Jersey resort had become a major seaside destination, with a long boardwalk, large hotels, and visitors who arrived by rail from Philadelphia and New York to spend the day at the surf. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
