Crowds on the sand at Atlantic City, New Jersey, show how the resort's beachfront had become a place of mass leisure by the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which hired photographers to document the country's towns, scenery and attractions, made this view from a set of 8 by 10 inch glass negatives taken sometime between 1900 and 1910. Atlantic City had grown from a seaside retreat into a major destination reached by railroad from Philadelphia and New York, and its bathing beach drew visitors eager for sea air and sunshine. The subject list tags the scene as a commercial beach, a reminder that bathing and boardwalk amusements there were run as paid business.
