Surf bathing at Atlantic City is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, made between 1900 and 1915, when the New Jersey resort was a fashionable seaside destination. Bathers of the era wore wool costumes that covered most of the body, and the scene shows how beach recreation was becoming a mass pastime, reachable by rail from Philadelphia and New York. The negative belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company collection, a commercial firm that produced views of American places for travel promotion and railroad advertising in the early twentieth century.
