Taken around 1908 on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, this view of a bathing beach at Atlantic City, New Jersey, shows the seaside as visitors of the era knew it. By then the resort had become a major summer destination, and the boardwalk, which opened in 1870, served as the town's social center while bathers headed to the sand in heavy wool suits. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued the view, was a commercial firm that sold photographs of American towns and landscapes to a broad public. The large negative format preserves fine detail of the crowd and the beach.
