Children tug at a rope on a sandy beach in this view, which the cataloger tentatively placed at Atlantic City, New Jersey. It is a 5 x 7 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented resorts and scenery across the country around 1890 to 1910. Atlantic City, with its boardwalk and beachfront hotels, drew crowds of vacationers during those years, so everyday shore leisure was a natural subject for photographers. The plate came to the library as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
