Shot on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, this view of the Atlantic City beach captures swimming as a popular pastime at the New Jersey resort between 1900 and 1910. By then Atlantic City had grown into one of the East Coast's leading summer destinations, drawing vacationers by rail from Philadelphia and New York. The negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording scenic places for sale as views of American life. Bathers of the period typically wore heavy, full-cut wool suits, a detail worth looking for among the figures on the sand and in the surf.
