Children at play on the sand give this view of Atlantic City's beach a lighter mood than the resort's hotels and piers usually suggest. It is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 to record scenery and towns. By then Atlantic City had grown into one of the East Coast's busiest seaside resorts, drawing rail passengers from Philadelphia and New York to its sands and boardwalk. Glass plates like this one captured fine detail, which makes the beach scene worth a close look.
