Baby carriages parked on the sand, with children playing nearby, set this view apart from the many resort scenes in the Detroit Publishing Company's files. It shows families who brought their youngest children to the Atlantic City shore. The company, based in Detroit, produced large numbers of views like this in the early 1900s, marketed for travel promotion and postcards that encouraged visitors to the seaside resort. Made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, the picture captures an era when Atlantic City drew crowds by rail and was known for its long beachfront and boardwalk. Its quiet domestic scene offers a glimpse of everyday leisure rather than the grand hotels usually featured in resort views.
