A boat drawn up on the sand beside the bathers gives this view its particular character, setting it apart from the more general beach scenes in the collection. The Detroit Publishing Company made this large glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, a period when Atlantic City was a major seaside resort reachable by rail from Philadelphia and New York, and its beach pictures recorded the crowds who came for sun, surf, and sea air. The negative entered the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Its title was assigned by a cataloger rather than the photographer, so the scene itself is the best guide to what it shows.
