Few things mark this view as a particular moment, but its title, "Bathing hour," points to the daily window when the Atlantic City beach filled with swimmers in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1908, sold views of American resorts, rail destinations, and scenic sites to travelers and railroads. Atlantic City, reached by rail from Philadelphia and New York, was one of the country's busiest seaside resorts at the time, and its beaches drew crowds in the heavy wool bathing costumes of the period. The negative later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado before reaching the Library of Congress.
