Bathing at Atlantic City, New Jersey, survives here as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, one of the large-format plates the Detroit Publishing Company used for its travel views. The Detroit firm sold scenes of resorts and scenic places to railroads and publishers in the early twentieth century, and Atlantic City, with its long beach and boardwalk, was one of the most popular seaside destinations for visitors from nearby cities. Bathing in this period meant heavy wool or cotton suits, bathhouses, and strict local rules on dress, so the picture shows how a crowded summer beach was arranged and seen between 1905 and 1920.
