Playful bathers clowning on an Atlantic City beach set this negative apart from the resort's more formal views of the boardwalk and surf. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced tens of thousands of American views between the 1890s and the 1920s, made it on a glass dry plate, a common format of the period that demanded careful handling. Atlantic City was then a fashionable seaside resort reachable by rail from Philadelphia, where visitors swam in heavy wool bathing suits, so scenes of horseplay like this one show how relaxed beach life was becoming.
