In a joke typical of its maker, the title "Only two of the endless throng" points to a pair of bathers lost among crowds at the Jersey shore. The stereo card was copyrighted by William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who made many views of Atlantic City for the stereograph trade, when the resort drew large summer crowds to its beach and boardwalk. The bathing costumes of the period, heavy wool with stockings and modest cut, are worth noticing, since they show how seaside dress was shaped by propriety as much as by comfort.
