Steeplechase Pier stood out on Atlantic City's boardwalk as one of the resort's best-known amusement piers, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, dated about 1905, records it during the years when the seaside resort was growing into a national destination for day-trippers and vacationers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many views of American resorts, scenic sites and cities for sale as souvenirs, produced the image. Its large glass plate captures fine detail in the pier's structures and crowds, and the negative now serves as a record of how Atlantic City's shoreline looked in the early twentieth century.
