The Boardwalk at Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the setting here, shown in a crowded parade scene that a photographer caught on a large glass dry plate negative, roughly 8 by 10 inches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which ran a major commercial photography and color printing business in the early twentieth century, made and catalogued the image, and its numbering appears on the negative. By the 1900s the Boardwalk, first built in 1870 as a way to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, had become one of the country's best-known seaside promenades, lined with hotels, piers and shops. Crowds like the one pictured were a defining feature of that resort life.
