Roller chairs, the hooded wicker seats pushed along the planks by attendants, were one of the signature sights of the Atlantic City boardwalk, and this glass negative captures them in the years when the resort was booming as a seaside destination. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many such views of American towns and resorts around 1890 to 1910, produced it as part of a commercial catalog meant for postcards and lantern slides. Taken in the era before the automobile became common, the picture shows how visitors of the period moved along the promenade and how the boardwalk served as a public stage for leisure.
