Wheeled chairs, the rolling seats pushed by attendants along the planks, set this view of Atlantic City's boardwalk apart from other scenes of the resort. The chairs were a local invention of the 1880s, and by around 1900 they were a familiar sight beside the large hotels lining the oceanfront. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, sold views like this to travelers and publishers who wanted to show the seaside as a place of leisure. The boardwalk, first built in 1870, was the resort's main promenade, and the scene reflects the crowds that made Atlantic City one of the East Coast's best-known summer destinations.
