Few resort scenes capture the Atlantic City boardwalk as clearly as this view of the Chalfonte, one of the large hotels that lined the oceanfront. The image shows the hotel's long boardwalk frontage along with the wheeled chairs, the rolling chairs pushed by attendants, that carried vacationers up and down the walk. Those chairs became a signature of the resort in the late nineteenth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns and resorts around 1900, made the glass negative, and the image records how leisure travel shaped the city's seafront in the years before World War I.
