This view pairs two of Atlantic City's best-known hotels, the Chalfonte and Haddon Hall, which stood close together near the New Jersey resort's beachfront and were long associated with its late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century boom as a seaside destination. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, resorts and scenery between the 1890s and the 1920s to promote travel, especially by rail. Its subject list also names beaches, a reminder that the hotels drew guests to the sand and surf of the Jersey shore.
