Steel Pier stretched out over the Atlantic from the boardwalk at Atlantic City, New Jersey, and this glass negative shows it as one of the resort's busiest amusement piers in the 1910s. The pier opened in 1898 and grew into a mix of promenade, concert hall, and attractions that drew summer crowds from Philadelphia and New York. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American resorts, rail lines, and scenic places for commercial sale in the early twentieth century. Its large 8 by 10 inch format gives unusually fine detail in the boardwalk, railings, and the crowd moving along the pier.
