A garden with sculpture stands beside the residence on Million Dollar Pier, the amusement pier that Atlantic City developer John Lake Young opened in 1906 as one of the resort's largest attractions. Placing a private home over the water, among the rides and promenades of a busy entertainment pier, was an unusual arrangement, and the view preserves a quieter side of a place better known for crowds. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between 1900 and 1915, was a major producer of travel views of American cities, resorts and landmarks.
