Two large resort hotels, the Dunlap and the Chalfonte, stand together in this view of Atlantic City, New Jersey, a seaside destination that drew vacationers by rail from Philadelphia and New York in the early 1900s. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its travel views of American towns, resorts and scenery at the turn of the twentieth century. Its date range, between 1910 and 1920, places it during the years when Atlantic City's hotels and boardwalk were at the height of their popularity as a resort, and the image records how the beachfront looked to visitors of that era.
