The St. Charles Hotel anchors this view of Atlantic City, the seaside resort that grew rapidly after rail service reached the island in 1854 and the boardwalk opened in 1870. Its large, multistoried facade and the open promenade beside it show how the city built its visitor trade around hotels and the boardwalk. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed resorts and scenic sites across the country in the early 1900s to promote rail travel, made this image as a glass-plate negative. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection is a useful record of how the resort looked in the years before 1915.
