The Seaside House, known on this glass negative as the Sea Side House, was one of the many hotels that lined Atlantic City's streets when the New Jersey resort drew large summer crowds by rail from Philadelphia and New York. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch plate between about 1900 and 1915, sold views like this one to travelers and promoters who wanted to show off American destinations. Its street scenes often capture the storefronts, carriages, and early automobiles of the period, and the negative later reached the State Historical Society of Colorado as a 1949 gift.
