A rolling chair waits on the boardwalk beside the Hotel Rudolf, and that detail places this view in Atlantic City's resort heyday. Wheeled chairs, pushed by attendants, were a familiar sight on the New Jersey shore's long promenade, carrying visitors past the hotels and crowds. The picture is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American towns, resorts and scenery around the turn of the twentieth century. Its estimated date range of 1890 to 1910 matches the years when the boardwalk was central to the city's tourist trade.
