Marlborough House was one of the large oceanfront hotels that gave Atlantic City its reputation as a resort in the decades after the railroad arrived in 1854. This glass-plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between about 1895 and 1910, records the hotel and its surroundings during the years when the company's photographers were traveling the country documenting towns, resorts and scenic sights. Hotels of this scale typically drew visitors who strolled the nearby boardwalk, which was itself a novelty when it first opened in 1870, so the setting is as much a part of the picture as the building.
