Two of Atlantic City's large oceanfront hotels, the Dennis and the Marlborough-Blenheim, share this frame. The city grew quickly in the early 1900s after railroads brought visitors from Philadelphia and New York, and its hotels competed with imposing facades, verandas, and boardwalk frontage to draw guests for the season. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views for travel promotion, recorded the scene on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format that holds fine detail in the buildings and street.
