A single pleasure yacht, rather than a crowd of bathers or the boardwalk, is the focus of this 8 x 10 inch glass negative from Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Detroit Publishing Company made thousands of such views between about 1900 and 1910, documenting resorts, cities and landscapes across the country for sale to travelers and publishers. Atlantic City, with its ocean piers and sheltered waters, drew wealthy visitors who kept sailing boats and launches there, so the picture captures a leisure pursuit of the Gilded Age seaside. The glass plate format also preserves fine detail in the rigging and hull.
